The best weighted vests for pull-ups add weight where a bar can't

Once ten strict pull-ups are easy, a vest is the next rung. Four vests ranked for pull-ups and dips — by how the weight hangs, how finely it adjusts, and whether it stays put — plus how much to add and what your bar is rated for.

Scores are our editorial judgment from published specs and mounting instructions, weighted for a renter or small-space trainer — not lab measurements. We have not tested these units.

When a vest, and how much

A vest is for people who can already do 8–10 strict pull-ups and 12–15 dips; below that, more reps and better form are the progression, not weight (see the pull-up progression). Start at 5–10 lb — about 5% of body weight — for sets of 5, and add 2.5–5 lb when 5 × 5 is clean. Most people who train weighted pull-ups seriously end up between 25 and 50 lb over a couple of years; a 40 lb vest is a long runway.

What matters in a vest for the bar

Where the weight sits. Weight split front and back hangs straight on a pull-up; a vest with all its weight in front pulls you forward at the top. Fine increments. 2.5–3 lb packets let you progress; 10 lb jumps stall you. Stays put. Shoulder straps and a cinched waist so the vest doesn't ride up on the way down. Bulk. Thin vests don't interfere with the bar at the top of a chest-to-bar rep.

What your bar is rated for

You plus the vest. A standard doorway bar is rated 300 lb; a 200 lb person in a 40 lb vest is 240 lb plus the dynamic load of the rep. The heavier-gauge doorway bars (Ally Peaks, KAKICLAY) are rated 440 lb; a wall bar 400–700 lb; the BaseBlocks bar 660 lb. Check the bar roundup for the number on yours, and keep weighted reps strict — a vest on a doorway bar is a static load, not a swing.

Vest or dip belt

A dip belt hangs plates from the hips: cheaper per pound, unlimited weight, and it swings. A vest distributes the weight, doesn't swing, and works for push-ups, walks and PFT prep too. For a home trainer who will use the weight for more than pull-ups, the vest.

How this list was built

We compared weight range, increment size, fit system and shell from the makers' listings and scored on the weighted vest rubric — fit for pull-ups 30%, adjustability of load 25%, durability 25%, value 20%. The ZFOsports leads on 3 lb steps to 40 lb; the RUNFast on range and price; the Hyper Vest on fit and running; the CAP as the cheap starter. No vests tested.

ZFOsports 40 lb Adjustable Weighted Vest

ZFOsports

A 1200D nylon vest that adjusts from 3 to 40 lb in 3 lb packets, one-size straps, padded shoulders, water-bottle and phone pockets — the 40 lb vest with the finest weight steps.

Best for
Progressing weighted pull-ups in 3 lb jumps from a light start

Why it is #1. 3 lb packets from 3 to 40 lb — the finest steps of any vest here — with padded shoulders and a 1200D shell. Two years of weighted pull-up progression in one vest.

Pros

  • 3 lb packets — the smallest increments of any vest here
  • 40 lb top end covers most people's weighted pull-up goals for years
  • Padded shoulders matter on dips and on long pull-up sets

Cons

  • One size fits most — very small or very large torsos may not cinch well
  • Heavier and bulkier than a 20 lb vest when full

Pick 2 · Weighted vests

RUNFast/RUNmax Adjustable Weighted Vest (12–140 lb)

RUNFast

The classic pocket vest: sold from 12 lb to 140 lb with iron weight bags in four front and four back pockets, 1000D nylon, chest 28–48 in., optional shoulder pads — buy the 20 or 40 lb for pull-ups.

Best for
Weighted pull-ups and dips on a budget, with weight you can take out in 2.5 lb steps

The classic pocket vest. Buy the 20 or 40 lb version; iron bags front and back so it hangs straight; chest 28–48 in.; lifetime warranty. Bulkier than the ZFO, and one vest per weight class.

Pros

  • Weight distributes front and back, so it hangs straight on a pull-up
  • Remove bags to progress from 10 lb up to the vest's rating
  • Lifetime warranty; shoulder-pad option for dips

Cons

  • Bulky; the 40 lb+ versions bounce on running
  • One vest per weight class — a 20 lb vest can't become a 40 lb

Specs from RUNFast — 12–140 lb Weighted Vest listing (weights, pockets, fit, shell).

Pick 3 · Weighted vests

Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO (10 lb)

Hyperwear

A slim, zip-front vest loaded with 0.25 in. steel micro-weights (10 lb, expandable) in sized fits — the vest that doesn't bounce on runs and doesn't shift on a pull-up.

Best for
A vest for the run and the pull-up bar both — PFT prep in one garment

For the bar and the run. Thin steel micro-weights in a compression fit that doesn't bounce — 10 lb, expandable to 20–25. The PFT vest: pull-ups and the three-mile in one garment.

Pros

  • Thin steel plates and a compression fit — no bounce running, no swing hanging from a bar
  • Sized by chest, with side lacing to dial the fit
  • Breathable, washable fabric

Cons

  • Max 20–25 lb depending on size — not a heavy pull-up vest
  • The most expensive per pound here

Pick 4 · Weighted vests

CAP Barbell 20 lb Adjustable Weighted Vest

CAP Barbell

A one-size mesh vest with removable 0.75 lb steel-shot packets to 20 lb, adjustable chest and waist belts and padded shoulders — the cheap entry into weighted pull-ups and walks.

Best for
A first light vest to add 5–20 lb to pull-ups, dips and walks

The starter. 0.75 lb packets to 20 lb, breathable mesh, cheap. Enough for the first year of weighted pull-ups; you'll outgrow it if the vest becomes the program.

Pros

  • 0.75 lb packets allow almost any load from 5 to 20 lb
  • Breathable mesh; machine-washable with packets removed
  • Reflective strips for evening walks

Cons

  • 20 lb ceiling — you'll outgrow it if weighted pull-ups become a focus
  • Two-belt fit is less secure inverted or on kipping movements

Specs from CAP Barbell — 20 lb Adjustable Weighted Vest (packets, fit, materials).

Buying guide

20 or 40 lb

20 lb if you're starting and might not stick with it. 40 lb if ten strict pull-ups are already easy — you'll be at 20 lb within months.

Weighted dips

Any vest here; padded shoulders (ZFO, RUNFast option) matter more on dips than on pull-ups.

FAQ

Questions readers ask

How much weight should I add to pull-ups?

Start at 5–10 lb (about 5% of body weight) for sets of 5 once 8–10 strict pull-ups are easy; add 2.5–5 lb when 5 × 5 is clean.

Is a weighted vest or a dip belt better for pull-ups?

A belt for maximum weight and price per pound; a vest for stable weight that doesn't swing and works for dips, push-ups and walks too.

Can a doorway pull-up bar hold a weighted vest?

Within its rating — 300 lb for standard bars, 440 lb for the heavy-gauge ones — with strict reps. You plus the vest must stay under it with margin.

What weighted vest is best for running and pull-ups?

A slim micro-weight vest like the Hyper Vest PRO — it doesn't bounce on the run or shift on the bar, at the cost of a 20–25 lb ceiling.
