Questions and short answers

Will a doorway pull-up bar damage my door frame?

A leverage bar presses foam or silicone pads against the trim on both sides of the door and on the wall above it. On a sound frame with standard trim it leaves no marks if you use it within its door-width range and don't swing on it; on soft or damaged trim it can dent. The full answer, with what to check first, is in do doorway pull-up bars damage door frames.

What ceiling height do I need for a pull-up bar?

For a full dead hang you need the bar high enough that your feet clear the floor with arms straight — roughly your height plus 6–8 in. of arm reach, which is why an 8 ft ceiling is tight for anyone over about 5 ft 10 in. Doorway bars sit at the top of the door (about 80 in.), so most people bend their knees. See ceiling height for a pull-up bar.

Doorway, wall-mount or free-standing — which pull-up bar should a renter buy?

If you can't drill, it's doorway or free-standing. A doorway bar wins on price and footprint if your door is 24–36 in. wide with trim; a free-standing tower wins if you also want dips or your doorway won't work. Wall and ceiling bars are for owners or landlords who say yes. The decision page: doorway vs wall-mount vs free-standing.

What's the weight limit on a doorway pull-up bar?

Most leverage bars are rated 300 lb; heavier-gauge ones (Ally Peaks, KAKICLAY, AmazeFan) are rated 400–440 lb. The rating assumes a sound frame — the bar is usually stronger than the trim it rests on.

How do I get my first pull-up?

Dead hangs, scapular pulls, negatives and band-assisted reps, three times a week, for four to eight weeks. The gear is a bar and one or two assistance bands. The plan is in how to get your first pull-up.

What size kettlebell should a beginner buy?

A single bell you can press overhead with strict form for five reps and swing for twenty: commonly 16 kg / 35 lb for most men and 8–12 kg / 18–26 lb for most women, adjusted for training history. The sizing table is in what size kettlebell should a beginner buy.

Can I jump rope in an apartment without annoying the neighbors?

Yes, with a mat, a lighter rope, low jumps and a sensible hour. Landing noise travels through the floor structure more than the air, so the mat matters more than anything else. See jump rope in an apartment.

How long should my jump rope be?

Stand on the middle of the rope; for a beginner the handles should reach the armpits, for a speed rope the lower chest. The chart by height is in jump rope length by height.

Weighted rope or speed rope — which should I buy first?

Weighted (1/4–1/2 lb) or a PVC rope if you're learning: the weight keeps the rope taut and easy to time. A thin speed cable is for double-unders once you have the rhythm. Speed rope vs weighted rope has the comparison.

Can I hang gymnastic rings without drilling?

From a doorway pull-up bar, a free-standing tower, or a strong beam or tree outside. Ring straps go over the bar, never the door trim. Three ways, with clearance numbers, are in how to hang gymnastic rings at home.

Are ceiling-mounted pull-up bars safe?

Into joists with the maker's lag bolts, yes — they're rated 500 lb and up. Into drywall, never. The joist guide is how to mount a pull-up bar to ceiling joists.

What size plyo box should I get?

A three-height box whose lowest side you can land on with a full flat foot: 16/20/24 in. for most beginners, 20/24/30 in. if you already jump. See what size plyo box should I get.

Can I use a weight sled on concrete?

Steel skids will scuff concrete and chew asphalt; grass and turf are ideal, and a wheeled sled works on any hard floor. See weight sled for concrete vs grass.
