The best agility hurdles, ranked by what happens when you clip one

You will clip a hurdle. Everyone clips a hurdle - that is what makes it training rather than stepping. So the spec that decides the purchase is not the height on the box, it is whether a hurdle you catch at speed flattens underfoot or puts you on the ground.

Scores are our editorial judgment from each maker's published specs and mounting instructions, weighted for a renter or small-space trainer.

What hurdles add that a ladder and cones do not

This site already ranks the other two footwork tools, so it is worth being precise about why you would own a third. An agility ladder trains a fixed path: the rungs tell your feet exactly where to go, and the skill is rhythm inside a pattern you cannot change. Cones do the opposite - they mark a space and leave the path to you, which is what makes them right for shuttles, cuts and change of direction.

Hurdles are the only one of the three that asks you to leave the ground. That is the whole category. A ladder and a set of cones can be run entirely with your feet low and your knees quiet; a hurdle cannot. It forces knee height, hip flexion and a genuine single-leg landing, which is why hurdle work shows up in warm-ups, in sprint mechanics and in the late stages of ankle and knee rehab. If your footwork drills have plateaued because you have learned to shuffle through everything, a hurdle is the cheapest fix available.

The second thing they do is lateral. Side-to-side hops over a low hurdle load the hip in the frontal plane, which almost nothing else in a home setup does - a jump rope does not, a ladder barely does, and a plyo box is strictly vertical. For about the price of a takeaway, a set of six hurdles adds a plane of movement to your week.

The criteria, in the order they matter

1. What happens when you clip it (30 percent). The one criterion the category is sold on least and decided by most. There are two designs. A one-piece molded hurdle with bounce-back construction flattens when a foot lands on it and springs straight back up - you lose a step and nothing else. A rigid framed hurdle, especially an assembled one or a weighted one, stays where it is: your foot stops, your momentum does not, and at full speed that is how an ankle goes. Since the entire point of hurdle work is to run at the edge of your coordination, the hurdle you will inevitably catch should be the forgiving kind.

2. Height for the drill it is for (25 percent). Not “taller is better” - taller is a different exercise. Six inches is a rhythm obstacle: your feet have to lift but your knees do not really work, which is exactly right for quick-feet patterns at high rep counts. Twelve inches demands real knee height and turns the drill into a plyometric one. Eight inches sits between them and is a defensible single purchase if you only ever buy one set.

3. Base stability on grass and on concrete (25 percent). Grass and turf grip anything. A smooth garage slab or a driveway does not, and a light hurdle contacted by a toe will slide a foot and a half. Weight in the base solves it completely; so does training on grass. This criterion is weighted high because the surface you have is not something you can change, and the wrong combination makes the whole set annoying enough to stop using.

4. Count, packability and value (20 percent). Six hurdles is the useful minimum for a real drill - four is a warm-up. After that, whether the set breaks down into a bag decides whether it travels to a park or lives in a corner of the garage. Price matters last, and the spread here is nearly three to one.

Where to put them, and how far apart

Hurdles need less space than a ladder, which is the quiet advantage for anyone training in a driveway. Six hurdles at a typical 18 to 24 in. spacing is about ten to twelve feet of run, against the 15 to 20 feet an agility ladder wants. A single-car driveway handles it. A garage with the car out handles it. What you do need is clear height - you are going to be bringing a knee up hard - and a surface you are willing to land on repeatedly.

On spacing: tighter spacing (around 18 in.) forces quick turnover and shorter ground contact; wider spacing (24 to 30 in.) lets you take a stride between hurdles and trains a more running-like pattern. Both are useful, and the practical approach is to set them tight for quick-feet work and wide for high-knee runs rather than agonizing over a number. What matters far more is that the spacing is even, because the whole value of a hurdle series is rhythm.

One surface warning, which applies to every plyometric tool on this site: repeated landing is the loudest, most structure-borne thing you can do in a building. If you live above someone, hurdles belong outside, full stop - the same conclusion our apartment gym setup guide reaches about box jumps and slam balls.

Why these four and not the hundred others

Search “agility hurdles” and you get dozens of 12-piece sets from brands that exist only as a marketplace storefront, usually bundled with cones, a ladder, a parachute and a jump rope for under forty dollars. Some of those bundles are fine value. None of them is on this page, for two reasons. First, the bundles are how you end up with four tools you did not choose and one you wanted - our ladder and cone roundups exist precisely so you can buy each one on its merits. Second, on a product whose job is to be stepped on at speed, a maker who will not publish a material is asking you to take the one spec that matters on trust.

What is below is the set with a real published spec sheet, the two heights from a long-established team-sports brand, and the cheap packable option - with the gaps in each named rather than filled in.

Pick 1 · Agility hurdles

SKLZ 6X Hurdles (6 in., 6-pack)

SKLZ

One-piece PVC with bounce-back construction: step on one at speed and it flattens and springs back instead of tripping you or snapping. That is the whole category decided in a sentence.

Best for
Fast footwork drills where you will clip a hurdle, because everyone clips a hurdle

It wins on one line in the maker's own trade spec: bounce-back construction with a one-piece twist design. In practice that means a hurdle you stand on folds flat and pops back up, which is the only fail mode in this category that costs you nothing. Every other set here is rigid, and rigid is what trips you. On a page that weights fail mode at 30 percent, that decides the top spot before anything else is considered.

The published material matters for the same reason. 97 percent PVC with 3 percent rubber is a real spec from a real sheet, which tells you the flex is engineered rather than incidental - and it is the only material figure anybody on this page publishes. One molded piece per hurdle also means nothing to assemble and nothing to lose, which after a season is worth more than it sounds. Six hurdles and a carry case.

Two honest marks against it. It costs roughly two and a half times a generic 8 in. set and you get six hurdles rather than twelve, so on pure count it looks poor value. And 6 in. is genuinely low: it trains foot speed and lateral hops beautifully and asks nothing of your knees, so if you came here wanting high-knee work this is the wrong set at any price. It is also light and unweighted, so on a slick slab a toe catch will send it sliding - not a safety problem given how it folds, but a reset.

Pros

  • Bounce-back one-piece design is the only fail mode here that does not end in a stumble or a broken hurdle
  • 6 in. is the right height for quick-feet work, where you want rhythm rather than knee drive
  • Published material (97% PVC, 3% rubber) and a carry case, from a maker with a real trade spec sheet
  • Nothing to assemble and nothing to lose - each hurdle is a single molded piece

Cons

  • Costs roughly two and a half times a generic 8 in. set for six hurdles rather than twelve
  • 6 in. is too low to train knee drive or any kind of hop height - this is a footwork tool
  • A light one-piece hurdle will scoot on a smooth garage slab if you catch it with a toe

Pick 2 · Agility hurdles

Champion Sports Speed Hurdle Set (12 in., set of 6)

Champion Sports

Twelve inches is the height where a hurdle stops being footwork and starts being knee drive - and six of them in assorted colors is the cheapest honest way to own that drill.

Best for
High-knee and hop-over work, and color-called drills for a group or a kid

Second, and the one to buy if the drill you actually want is knee drive. Twelve inches is the height where a hurdle stops being a rhythm obstacle and starts being a plyometric one - high-knee marches, high-knee runs, two-foot and single-leg hop-overs all become real work, and none of them are available at six inches. Six hurdles in six different colors also makes a called-color reaction drill possible when you train alone with a phone and a random number generator, which is the same trick that puts the SKLZ cones top of our cone roundup.

Champion Sports is a long-established team-sports supplier rather than a storefront, which is worth something on durability even without a published spec.

It is second rather than first on fail mode and on disclosure. A rigid 12 in. frame clipped at speed does not flatten - your foot stops and your momentum does not, and at 12 in. there is enough frame there to matter. And Champion publishes no material, no weight and no base spec for this set anywhere we could read; championsports.com would not return a readable product page on the day we checked, which is the same result we recorded on 7 October. We have scored that as unverified rather than assuming it is fine. There is also no published carry bag, which for six 12 in. frames is a real storage question.

Pros

  • 12 in. genuinely changes the drill - it demands knee height rather than foot speed
  • Six different colors makes a called-color reaction drill possible when you train alone with a phone
  • A long-established team-sports brand rather than a marketplace storefront

Cons

  • Champion Sports publishes no material, weight or base spec for this set anywhere we could read - championsports.com would not return a readable product page on 28 October 2026, as on 7 October
  • A rigid 12 in. hurdle is the one that trips rather than flattens if you clip it at speed - scored accordingly
  • No carry bag published, which matters more than it sounds for six 12 in. frames

Pick 3 · Agility hurdles

Champion Sports Weighted Training Hurdles (12 in.)

Champion Sports

The same 12 in. height with weight in the base, which is the one upgrade that matters if you train on a smooth slab or outdoors in any wind.

Best for
A concrete driveway or a windy yard, where an unweighted hurdle will not stay put

Third overall and the clear first choice for one specific situation: a smooth concrete driveway, a garage slab, or anywhere outdoors with wind. Weight in the base is the one upgrade in this category that solves a problem you will otherwise meet every session, because an unweighted hurdle on concrete slides a foot and a half the first time a toe catches it and you spend the session resetting marks instead of training. Same 12 in. knee-drive height as the set above, so the two mix in a drill.

If your training surface is a slab and your drills are high-knee work, buy these and stop reading.

Why it is not higher. It is the most expensive thing on this page, and Champion publishes neither the number of hurdles in the set nor the base weight - which means you cannot work out the cost per hurdle before ordering, and we are not going to guess it for you. The weighted base is also, by design, the opposite of a forgiving fail mode: these stay upright when you clip them, which is the feature for holding a mark and the hazard for your shin. And they are the heaviest set here to carry and to store. A good product with a narrow, real use case.

Pros

  • A weighted base is the difference between a hurdle that holds its mark and one you reset every third rep
  • Solves the single most annoying failure of hurdle work on concrete - the hurdle skating away on contact
  • Same 12 in. knee-drive height as the set above, so the two are interchangeable in a drill

Cons

  • The most expensive thing on this page and Champion publishes neither the count in the set nor the base weight, so you cannot work out the cost per hurdle before ordering
  • Weight in the base means a rigid hurdle that stays upright - good for the mark, bad for your shin if you clip it
  • Heavier to carry and to store than any of the other three

Pick 4 · Agility hurdles

GHB Agility Hurdles (8 in., detachable)

GHB

Detachable hurdles at 8 in. with a carry bag for about a third of the price of the SKLZ set - the one to buy if the hurdles live in a car boot between sessions.

Best for
Buying a first set of hurdles cheaply, and carrying them to a park

Fourth, and the honest budget answer. Eight inches splits the difference between footwork and knee drive better than you would expect - low enough for quick lateral hops, high enough that a beginner gets a real hop height - and the detachable construction plus a carry bag makes this the most packable set on the page. If the hurdles need to travel to a park or a pitch, this is the one that goes in a bag rather than filling a car.

GHB is also a known quantity at this price point on this site: its Pro Agility Ladder is the budget pick in our ladder roundup, so the brand has earned a place here rather than being picked off a search page.

The costs of the price. GHB publishes no spec sheet at all - no material, no base width, no weight - and this page scores that absence rather than filling it in, which is most of why it ranks fourth rather than second. Detachable also cuts both ways: two parts per hurdle is twice as many pieces to lose in the bag it came in. And the combination of light, rigid and unweighted is the one most likely to send a hurdle flying when a foot catches it, which is exactly the criterion this page cares most about.

Pros

  • Cheapest set here by a wide margin, and 8 in. splits the difference between footwork and knee drive
  • Detachable construction plus a carry bag is the most packable option on this page
  • GHB's agility ladder is already the budget pick in our ladder roundup, so the brand is a known quantity at this price

Cons

  • GHB publishes no spec sheet - no material, no base width, no weight - and the entry scores that absence rather than guessing
  • Detachable means two parts per hurdle, which is twice as many things to lose in a bag
  • A light, rigid, unweighted frame is the combination most likely to go flying when a foot catches it

Buying guide

Buy the height, not the set

The single best piece of advice in this category is to decide which drill you are short of before you look at a product. If your footwork sessions have become comfortable and you want faster feet, buy 6 in. and get the forgiving one. If you want knee height, hip range and genuine hop-overs, buy 12 in. and accept the rigid fail mode. If you want one set to cover both adequately, 8 in. is the honest compromise. Two sets of six at different heights is a better purchase than one set of twelve at a height you did not choose, and costs about the same.

Match the base to your surface before anything else

Grass and turf grip a light hurdle well enough that weight in the base buys you nothing. Smooth concrete, a sealed garage floor and a windy yard all punish an unweighted hurdle, and the symptom is not danger, it is attrition - you stop using the set because half the session is resetting it. If your only surface is a slab, either buy the weighted set or buy the bounce-back set and accept that a clip means a reset. What does not work is a light rigid hurdle on concrete, which is the combination the cheap twelve-packs sell.

What a hurdle session actually looks like

Six hurdles, even spacing, three to five drills, eight to twelve passes each with a walk back between. The canonical set: forward quick-feet (one foot between each), lateral in-and-outs, two-foot hops, single-leg hops, and high-knee runs if you have the height for it. Total working time is under ten minutes, which is why hurdles are usually a warm-up or a finisher rather than a session on their own. For where that fits in a week, conditioning workouts at home puts footwork in context, and the agility ladder drills guide has the drill progressions that transfer straight across to hurdles.

Hurdles, ladder or cones - if you are only buying one

Buy cones first. They are the cheapest, they are the only one of the three that trains change of direction, and they can mark out a ladder pattern or a hurdle spacing in a pinch. Buy a ladder second if your sport rewards foot speed inside a fixed pattern. Buy hurdles when your feet have got quick and your knees have stayed lazy - they are the specialist of the three, and the only one that makes you leave the ground. All three together is about $100 and takes up less room than one kettlebell.

What we did not rank, and why

The 12-piece bundle sets (Gemscream, Seenelling, Wettarn, Xtreme11 and a dozen more, roughly $50 to $66 for 12 hurdles, several live and cheap) - all publish a height and a count and nothing else: no material, no base spec, no construction. On a product designed to be stepped on, that is the one gap that cannot be waved through, so none is scored. The combo kits that bundle hurdles with a ladder, cones, a parachute and a rope for under $40 - genuinely cheap, and the reason this site ranks each tool separately. Adjustable-height hurdles (Body Sport's five-set, Seenelling and Jenaai's 6-to-42 in. track hurdles, FORZA's weighted adjustable set) - the adjustable idea is the most appealing thing in the category and we wanted to rank one, but bodysport.com served a mismatched TLS certificate to an automated read on 28 October 2026 and networldsports.com returned 403, so no adjustable set could be specced against a maker's own page. Action for a future run: re-check bodysport.com and networldsports.com for an adjustable set. Dog agility hurdles turn up throughout these search results and are a different product for a different athlete.

How this list was built

Each set's ASIN was confirmed live on 28 October 2026 with a title-verified lookup - brand, height and count tokens present in the listing title, with a purchasable offer. Heights, construction, materials and base design come from the page named under each product; three of the four makers publish nothing readable beyond the listing, and those entries say so and score the absence rather than assuming a spec. Scores are editorial judgments from those published specs against the hurdle rubric, which weights fail mode at 30 percent, height-for-the-drill at 25, base stability at 25 and count, packability and value at 20. Nothing here was hands-on or lab tested; the methodology page sets out exactly what the scores are and are not.

FAQ

Questions readers ask

What height agility hurdles should I buy?

Pick the height off the drill. 6 in. for quick-feet rhythm work and lateral hops - high turnover, low knee. 12 in. for high-knee marches and runs and for real hop-overs, which is a different and harder session. 8 in. if you only want one set and need it to do a bit of both. Buying 12 in. because it looks more serious and then using it for footwork drills is the most common mistake in the category.

How many agility hurdles do I need?

Six is the useful minimum, and six is what most of the sets here contain. Four works as a warm-up but gives you too few contacts to build any rhythm, and rhythm is the point of a hurdle series. Twelve is genuinely better if you have the room, which is the one real argument for the cheap bundle sets - just be aware you are trading a published material for the extra count.

How far apart should agility hurdles be?

Around 18 in. for quick-feet work, where you want short ground contacts and fast turnover, and 24 to 30 in. for high-knee runs, where you want a stride between hurdles. Six hurdles at that spacing is roughly ten to twelve feet of run - less than an agility ladder needs. What matters much more than the exact number is that the spacing is even, because an uneven series breaks the rhythm you are training.

Are agility hurdles better than an agility ladder?

They are different tools, not better and worse. A ladder trains foot speed inside a fixed path and keeps your feet low; a hurdle forces you to leave the ground, which trains knee height, hip flexion and single-leg landing. Most people should own cones first, a ladder second and hurdles third - hurdles are the specialist. The ladder roundup and the cone roundup cover the other two.

What happens if you trip over an agility hurdle?

It depends entirely on the design, which is why this page ranks on it. A one-piece bounce-back hurdle flattens under your foot and springs back - you lose a step. A rigid framed hurdle stops your foot while your momentum carries on, which at full speed is how an ankle or a knee gets hurt. If you are going to run at the edge of your coordination, and you should be, buy the forgiving design and keep the rigid ones for controlled high-knee work.

Can you use agility hurdles indoors or in an apartment?

Indoors with a high enough ceiling, yes - they need less floor than a ladder. In an apartment with neighbors below, no. Repeated landing is structure-borne impact and travels straight through a building, which is the same reason we tell apartment readers not to buy a slam ball. The apartment gym setup guide covers what does survive a shared floor; hurdles belong outside or in a ground-floor garage.

Do I need weighted agility hurdles?

Only if you train on a smooth slab or outdoors in wind. On grass or turf a light hurdle holds its mark perfectly well and weight buys you nothing but carrying. On sealed concrete an unweighted hurdle slides a foot and a half the first time you catch it with a toe, and resetting marks is what makes people abandon a set. Match the base to the surface you actually have.

Are agility hurdles good for adults, or just kids?

Both, and the height is what changes. Adult hurdle work is mostly warm-up and sprint mechanics - high-knee marches, lateral hops, single-leg landings - and 12 in. is the useful height for it. For children the priority flips to the forgiving fail mode, because a child clips far more hurdles than an adult does, and 6 in. is plenty. The same logic drives our agility ladders for kids page, which re-ranks on exactly that basis.
