Gymnastic rings vs TRX: the rings do more for less, unless you need the door
A suspension trainer hangs from one point and does rows, presses and hundreds of variations; rings hang from two, cost a third as much, and add dips, support holds and muscle-ups. Where each wins — and the one thing a TRX does that rings can't.

What each one is
A TRX-style suspension trainer is a single strap that splits into two handles with foot cradles, hung from one anchor point — a door anchor, a beam strap or a bar. You lean away from the anchor and use body angle for resistance: rows, chest presses, lunges, pikes. Gymnastic rings are two independent straps with a ring on each, hung from two points a shoulder-width apart. They do the same rows and presses, and because the rings are separate and rigid they also take your full weight in support — dips, L-sits, muscle-ups.

The single-anchor advantage
One strap over a closed door is the whole reason a suspension trainer sells: a renter with no bar, no beam and no tower can hang it in thirty seconds and take it down in ten. Rings need two anchor points a shoulder width apart — a bar, a beam, two joist hooks — or a doorway bar to hang from, which is the renter's answer and costs about what a set of rings does. Rings from a doorway bar do rows, presses, dips and support holds; they don't do swinging or muscle-up transitions, which need a mounted bar.
What rings do that a strap can't
Support yourself on top of a suspension trainer and the single strap swings you into the anchor; the handles converge and there is nothing to press down on. Rings are two fixed points: the support hold, the dip and the muscle-up all live there, and they are the exercises that turn “bodyweight training” into a strength program. See gymnastic rings for beginners for the first six.
Price
A numbered-strap wood ring set costs a fraction of the branded suspension trainer. Unbranded suspension trainers close the gap, at the cost of the strap quality that matters when you're leaning your whole weight into a buckle. If the budget is tight and you have anywhere to hang two straps, rings.

Pick 1 · Gymnastic rings
PACEARTH Wooden Gymnastic Rings (1500 lb)
PACEARTH
Birch rings on 14.76 ft, 1.5 in. cam-buckle straps printed with a scale, rated 1500 lb — the wood ring set that makes leveling both rings under a ceiling a ten-second job.
Best for
A first pair of wood rings hung from a doorway bar, a beam or a tree
Pros
- Numbered straps — set both rings to the same mark and they're level, every time
- 1.5 in. straps are wider than most, so they dig into wrists less on dips
- Serrated cam buckles; birch grips well with or without chalk
Cons
- Wood must stay dry — not for a rainy balcony or an outdoor tree year-round
- 14.76 ft is long for an 8 ft ceiling; you'll coil the excess

FAQ
Questions readers ask
Are gymnastic rings better than TRX?
For strength — dips, support holds, muscle-ups — yes, and they cost less. For hanging from a closed door with no other anchor, a suspension trainer is the only option.
Can you do dips on a TRX?
Not properly — the single strap converges and swings under support. Dips are a rings (or dip bar) exercise.
Can gymnastic rings hang from a door?
Not from the door itself — from a doorway pull-up bar, yes. A door anchor strap can hold ring straps for rows and presses, but not for hanging your full weight.
Do I need both rings and a TRX?
Almost nobody does. Rings plus a doorway bar covers rows, presses, dips and pull-ups; the only reason to add a suspension trainer is foot-cradle work or a door-only anchor.
