Guide · Jump Ropes
Jump rope length by height: the chart, and the test that beats it
Stand on the middle of the rope; handles to the armpits for a beginner, to the chest for speed. Here is that rule as a chart from 5 ft to 6 ft 6 in., how to trim each type of rope, and the fixes for short and tall jumpers.

| 5 ft 6 in. | 8 ft 6 in. | 8 ft 0 in. | Medium |
| 5 ft 8 in. | 8 ft 8 in. | 8 ft 2 in. | Medium |
| 5 ft 10 in. | 8 ft 10 in. | 8 ft 4 in. | Medium / Large |
| 6 ft 0 in. | 9 ft 0 in. | 8 ft 6 in. | Large |
| 6 ft 2 in. | 9 ft 2 in. | 8 ft 8 in. | Large |

| 6 ft 6 in. | 9 ft 6 in. | 9 ft 0 in. | X-Large |
These are starting points, not a fitting. Crossrope publishes its own size chart — use theirs for their ropes, since the lengths are fixed. For any trimmable rope, cut to the chart, jump for a week, and take another inch off if the rope is hitting the floor a foot in front of you.
The 30-second test
- Hold a handle in each hand and step on the middle of the rope with one foot.
- Pull the handles straight up along your body, rope taut.
- Beginner or PVC rope: the tops of the handles should reach the armpits.
- Speed rope: the tops of the handles should reach the lower chest / sternum.
- Longer than that: shorten. Shorter: you bought too small — or you're ready for a speed length.
How to shorten each type of rope
Snap-lock PVC (Elite Jumps Boxer): pull the cord end out of the handle, unclip the lock, slide it to the new length, re-clip. Reversible — the only rope type you can lengthen again. Cut PVC (XYLsports): pop the end cap, pull the excess through, cut with scissors, replace the cap. Once. Coated cable (WOD Nation, DEGOL, REP): loosen the screw collar at the handle, slide the cable, tighten, then cut the excess with cable cutters (the Buddy Lee ships them; the others need a pair). Weighted (Crossrope): not trimmable — buy by height.
If you're short
Most ropes ship at 9–10 ft and will need 1–2 ft removed for anyone under 5 ft 4 in.; that is normal, and it is why trimmable ropes are the easy answer. The one thing to watch is handle length — a 6 in. handle on a short person's rope changes the effective arc more than on a tall person's. Speed-rope makers sell short-handle versions for exactly this.
If you're tall
Over 6 ft 3 in., check the shipped length before buying: 9 ft ropes are too short. The Elite Jumps Boxer (10 ft), the WOD Nation (10 ft) and the Buddy Lee (9 ft 3 in. plus 6.2 in. handles) all fit tall jumpers; the DEGOL (9 ft) is marginal.
Why length matters more than anything else you can adjust
A rope 4 in. too long hits the floor well ahead of your feet, bounces, and arrives at your toes late; you jump early, it catches you. A rope 4 in. too short passes under you with no clearance and clips the heels. The 2 in. band around the right length is where the rope arrives exactly when your feet leave the ground — which is what “rhythm” is. Sizing is the free fix that most people never do; the second free fix is jumping lower.

Pick 1 · Jump ropes
Elite Jumps Boxer Jump Rope 3.0
Elite Jumps
The classic boxer's rope done well: a 5 mm PVC cord with a string core, 10 ft to trim, 5.5 in. polymer handles with a smooth dowel, snap-lock ends for resizing — the rope that teaches rhythm.
Best for
Learning footwork and rhythm; a rope you can size yourself and use outdoors
Pros
- String-core PVC gives a steady, audible turn — the best feedback of any non-weighted rope here
- 10 ft cord fits anyone up to about 6 ft 3 in. before trimming
- Snap-lock ends make resizing reversible, unlike a cut PVC rope
Cons
- A dowel turns slower than a bearing; double-unders are possible but not its strength
- PVC on bare concrete wears — jump on a mat

Pick 2 · Jump ropes
WOD Nation Adjustable Speed Jump Rope
WOD Nation
A four-bearing speed rope — two bearings in each handle and two at the cable tips — on a 10 ft coated steel cable with aluminum handles, for double-unders at a house-brand price.
Best for
Double-unders and speed work once you have the basic rhythm
Pros
- Four-bearing system rotates 360° without the cable twisting
- Lightweight aluminum handles reduce forearm fatigue over long sets
- 10 ft cable fits tall jumpers and trims down
Cons
- Bare-thin cable whips — misses hurt and the coating frays on concrete
- The wrong first rope: no weight means no feedback for timing

Pick 3 · Jump ropes
XYLsports Jump Rope
XYLsports
A 9 ft 8 in. PVC rope with built-in bearings and foam handles that you size by cutting — heavier than a cable, quieter on a floor, and the easiest rope to learn on for the money.
Best for
Beginners and anyone jumping on an apartment floor who wants a rope they can feel
Pros
- PVC has enough weight to feel the turn — beginners trip less than on a thin cable
- Softer landing sound on a floor than a steel cable; kinder to downstairs neighbors
- Sizes by cutting: pop the end cap, pull the rope through, trim
Cons
- PVC wears on rough concrete faster than a coated cable
- Once cut it can't be lengthened — measure twice

FAQ
Questions readers ask
How long should my jump rope be?
About your height plus 3 ft for a beginner (handles to the armpits when you stand on the middle), height plus 2.5 ft for a speed rope (handles to the lower chest).
What jump rope length for 5'4?
About 8 ft 4 in. for a beginner rope, 7 ft 10 in. for a speed rope. Confirm with the stand-on-the-middle test.
What jump rope length for 5'10?
About 8 ft 10 in. for a beginner rope, 8 ft 4 in. for a speed rope.
Is my jump rope too long or too short?
Hitting the floor a foot ahead of you and catching your toes late: too long. Clipping your heels with no clearance: too short. The right length arrives under you as your feet leave the floor.
